2024 MASS ATROCITIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT SYMPOSIUM

  • Center for Earth Jurisprudence @ Barry Law (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Oftentimes when international crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes are discussed the connection between these crimes and the environment is ignored or often discussed tangentially instead of in direct connection with or as a possible motive for the commission of international crimes. The connection between the environment and mass atrocities and the actions of perpetrators is under-discussed. For example, many activists from Myanmar have raised the issue of the military junta’s source of income being derived from Jade mines in the Kachin region or pearls from the Tanintharyi region. Recent reports indicate gold mining is one of the underlying issues fueling the genocide in Sudan.

This symposium will focus on the link between mass atrocities and the environment. It will make the connection between the environment and how it fuels or is related to and part of the commission of mass atrocities.  The CLE approved sessions will cover a broad range of topics from different parts of the world, including but not limited to genocide, crimes against humanity, climate crimes, and how differing legal philosophies and movements attempt to address or provide redress in these situations.

Join us on Friday November 15th on the campus of Barry Law in Orlando, FL for the first day of our symposium. Check in will begin at 2pm in our Moot Courtroom lobby with our opening remarks scheduled for 2:45pm.

A meet and greet will be hosted by the Center for Earth Jurisprudence following the first day’s events at 6pm in room 311 of our Legal Advocacy Center.

On Saturday November 16th, we begin our day in the Moot Courtroom at 9am. A catered lunch will be provided. Florida CLE credit is available for attendees.
