Yale Social Justice in National Security: Twenty Years Post-9/11, Part 2

  • Center for Earth Jurisprudence 6441 East Colonial Drive Orlando, FL, 32807 United States (map)

This program will include a discussion of the award-winning film, The Mauritanian, which was a legal drama of the true story of Mohamedou Ould Salahi.

After fourteen years of being held in Guantánamo without charge or trial, Mohamedou Ould Slahi was been released and reunited with his family in Mauritania. Slahi’s book, the first and only memoir by a still-imprisoned Guantánamo detainee, was published in January 2015 — with numerous redactions — from a 466-page handwritten manuscript. It was an international bestseller and has since been translated into multiple languages for publication in more than 25 countries. In 2021, The Mauritianian, a film based on Guantánamo Diary, was released. The event will also include discussion of efforts on the closure of Guantanamo Bay military prison, which are currently underway. Author and activist Mohamedou Ould Slahi will speak about his experiences. He will be joined by Nadia B. Ahmad, Visiting Associate Professor at Yale Law School, and Hanieh Jodat Barnes, National Director, Lift the Sanctions Campaign. The program will be co-moderated by Sabrine Djemil of Yale Law School and Shaezmina Khan of Yale University.
