GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

Position Summary

The Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) is seeking a Global Communications Director to grow our membership base and amplify and build the Rights of Nature movement.

We are seeking someone with knowledge of digital communication basics, but who is also an innovator. Experience with social media outreach and a range of communication skills are a must. The applicant must be fluent in both English and Spanish.

The Global Communication Director will be responsible for generating frequent outgoing communications to the public and our membership on a series of platforms, including social media and email; implementing meaningful engagement cycles for the public and our membership with online campaigns, webinar series, and actions; and maintaining and updating our website and related digital platforms.

This is a senior-level consultant position, which reports to GARN’s Director. While the core team is based in Quito, Ecuador this position can be filled by a qualified candidate able to work remotely.

GARN is a global network of organizations and individuals committed to the universal adoption and implementation of legal systems that recognize, respect, and enforce “Rights of Nature”.  Rather than treating Nature as property under the law, the time has come to recognize that natural communities have the right to exist, maintain, and regenerate their vital cycles.

Our members are a diverse network of organizations, scientists, attorneys, economists, indigenous leaders, authors, spiritual leaders, business leaders, politicians, actors, homemakers, students, and activists. GARN represents people from all walks of life in over 100 countries on 6 continents including North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia who are looking to transform our human relationship with our planet.

 Global Communications Director Details

We are looking for the right person to join our Global team. The best applicant will have:

●      Marketing and communications experience with a strong visual aesthetic.

●      A demonstrated ability to create effective and engaging written and visual content.

●      3 years+ online communications experience working with global climate justice movements, an analysis of grassroots system change, an understanding of Indigenous rights, and a passion for the inherent rights of Mother Earth.

The Global Communications Director will be responsible for developing and executing GARN’s overall communications strategy and will focus significant time and resources on generating public engagement and deepening our members’ collaboration. The Director will drive the digital side of GARN’s work and will provide the technical knowhow necessary to amplify our Rights of Nature message and movement building efforts.  The successful candidate will utilize and grow our global partners to be actively engaged and will design smart and strategic digital campaigns to activate our membership and base.

We are an organized and detail-oriented coalition. It is essential  that  you  are  both  a  team  player  and  a  self-starter.  In order to ensure effective messaging, this position requires significant  information-gathering  and  writing,  with  an  emphasis  on both internal  communications  with  our  existing  membership base as well as writing and strategizing for our external outreach and educational network.

The Global Communications Director must be a nimble and creative thinker who is able to make use of our unique organizational resources and opportunities, carry out creative online and digital tactics to advance our mission, and seek out novel tests to optimize everything from our messaging to our technology. They must possess excellent judgment and the ability to respond quickly to take advantage of new and strategic opportunities to advance the Rights of Nature movement.

The ideal candidate will combine a campaigners’ strategic knowledge of a broad set of Rights of Nature issues with a digital organizers’ tactical expertise. They must be equally comfortable quickly generating digital communications/campaigns and collaborating thoughtfully with fellow team members, diverse members, and movement allies all over the world.

Job Responsibilities

The Global Communications Director is responsible for the development and implementation of internal and external communication strategies in order to advance the goals and mission of GARN. Additional responsibilities include:

●      Developing and executing GARN’s digital communication strategy:

○      Oversee GARN’s communication with our global partners to build GARN’s membership base, deepen public engagement, and strengthen our global movement efforts;

○      Specifically develop and implement strategies for increased engagement on social media platforms in collaboration with the GARN partners.

●      Write and translate official documents and press releases on behalf of GARN that analyzes important developments in the Rights of Nature movement and provides membership and followers with a clear understanding of GARN’s position on such developments.

●      Write compelling emails and social media posts, often under rapid-response conditions.

●      Encourage member’s voice in advocacy efforts. Grow and activate GARN’s email lists.

●      Develop and send a monthly GARN newsletter, updating our members and subscribers on the latest developments in the Rights of Nature movement.

●      Create and share digital content across GARN’s social media platforms that effectively conveys GARN’s core messaging and provides legal and political analysis on current events.

●      Manage and update the GARN website.

●      Manage and update the GARN mailing list and membership base.

●      Assist and support the graphic design team with layouts for various activities of GARN.

●      Manage communications with a number of strategic partners and organizations and track developments in a series of issue verticals.

●      Assist the Organizer with the communication, promotion, and needs of webinar series.

●      Assist with drafting, editing, and proofreading additional GARN communications and governing documents.

●      Help establish communication norms and values for GARN campaigns and movement building efforts.

●      Other Communication tasks assigned by the Executive Committee and GARN Director.

Required Qualifications

●      (Education level: third degree) in Communications, Journalism, Marketing/Public Relations, or related fields

●      Minimum of 3-5 years in a communications role, with extensive content creation experience and firsthand knowledge of integrated communications campaigns

●      Dynamic writing style

●      Editing and proofreading experience

●      Experience in logistics and organization of online events

●      Demonstrated values consistent with the core mission and vision of GARN and deep understanding of global justice movements

●      A strong working knowledge of social media platforms including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

●      A strong working knowledge of communication tools such as WhatsApp, Slack, and video conferencing platforms such as Zoom

●      Expertise in Microsoft Office, WordPress, and Google Project Management tools

●      Ability to assist graphic design team with messaging and promotion

●      Highly organized self-starter with excellent time management and interpersonal skills

●      Ability to accommodate a fast-paced environment

●      Consistent and reliable internet connection

●      Fluent English and Spanish (speaking/writing) required. Other languages are a plus.

●      Ability to work very actively from home in a digital manner and/or from the Terra Mater office in Cumbaya, Ecuador.

Compensation

The salary range is $1,000 - $1,500 a month for the position. Compensation will be based on experience.
